St. Margarethen (Austria)

St Margarethen is a town in Burgenland near the state capital of Eisenstadt, in Austria. It is home to a large 1st-century Roman quarry. For 2,000 years sandstone was quarried in the St. Margarathen quarry. This created a bizarre rocky landscape that resembles a monumental opera backdrop and it is now also used as such. With popular opera productions, the Opera Festival has since drawn over 200,000 visitors year after year. In addition to international opera stars, a wide-ranging program also offers big acts from jazz and pop under the stars. Every year in the "Children's Opera" series, a fairy-tale opera also carries a young audience off into imaginative magical worlds. A varied range in the newly designed Foyer Park provides for culinary delights. The symbiosis of calcareous soils and the microclimate fostered by Lake Neusiedl provides the conditions for the special wine culture of the region, which is presented at numerous stalls. In the heart of the UNESCO Biosphere Park Salzburger Lungau the small community of St. Margarethen offers the ideal starting point for numerous activities, both summer and winter. The village is is surrounded by the beautiful mountains of the Lungau region, in the north the Niederen Tauern with challenging hiking trails and in the south the gentle Nockberge - especially for families ideal itineraries. The famous Murradweg runs through St. Margarethen and we are the valley town of Topskiregion Katschberg-Aineck - directly located at the ski area without having to climb the mountain by car.
